MDUMC Hummingbird Ministry
Every year, over 180,000 incidents of domestic
violence are reported. Many more go unreported. Intimate male partners in Texas kill over 100 women every year. Houston police alone answer an average of 155 abuse calls each month. Conservative estimates indicate that these numbers likely only represent 1/5 of all domestic violence incidents and, with the failing economy, the numbers continue to increase. In 2010, 142 women in Texas were murdered by an abusive partner. The youngest three victims were only seventeen years old, the eldest was78. Houston hadthe highest number of murdered victims. 50% of all homicides of female partnersare committed by men after separation.
Although ~12,000 adults and ~18,000 children may find refuge in shelters, over 20% of domestic violence victims are turned away for lack of space at the most dangerous time of their lives. As they transition into the community and try to establish a healthier life, survivors also face many challenges that require a strong support system.
It is the goal of the Hummingbird Ministry to support domestic violence victims as they begin to rebuild their lives. Through partnership with local agencies we provide items that are not available from other resources.
January-February...
January and February are the months we support area agencies by collecting fleece items (fleece blankets, sweat pants and shirts, scrubs, etc.) for emergency supplies that workers provide when picking up victims from hospitals and police stations. Help us begin restoring dignity at the first contact. Watch for these items on sale during the next few weeks and bring them to our table in Friendship Court or deliver them to the church office c/o Sheri Kelley during regular church hours. Here is a flyer with some more information.
