Mission Statement
A community of caring people reaching out to provide childcare, education, and assistance to neighborhood families and individuals, empowering them to meet life's challenges.
Operated and supported by MDUMC starting in 1983, Larkin Community Center began operating as a tax-exempt organization in January 2003, guided by a board of directors, while retaining close ties to MDUMC. Larkin serves the community with the following ministries:
Day Care and After School Care
Larkin’s licensed Day Care provides instruction in English for 5 classrooms of pre-school children 18 months to 5 years. We offer The Young Learner Program to children 3-5 which is collaboration with HISD to offer Pre-K classes. The program prepares children to enter school. Hot meals and snacks are provided. After-school care and summer care are available up to age 12. Our Day School Director is Laurie Perez.
English As a Second Language ESL Classes
English as a Second Language classes help improve communication for daily interactions. Daytime classes are available on Tuesday and Friday from 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Emergency Food Pantry
Larkin Food Pantry distributes non-perishable food to residents in zip code 77007. Clients are eligible every two weeks. Registration is required. The pantry is open Tuesday and Friday from 8:45-11:00 a.m.
Emergency Services
Residents in 77007 may request financial help once every 7 months up to 5 times for utility and rental needs. Photo ID and proof of address are required. Service hours are Tuesday and Friday from 8:45-11:00 a.m. Mamograms, blood glucose screening, and vision and hearing screenings are not available. Immunizations for children are offered at least 3 times per year free of charge. Transportation for free flu shots is available once per year. Children’s free dental screenings are offered when the immunizations are here. Blood Pressure screenings are available.
Seasonal Ministries
Larkin registers residents in zip code 77007 for distribution of school supplies, Thanksgiving turkeys and sides, Christmas toys and food bags. We provide the community with Easter Egg Hunts and free meals on National Night Out.
One Great Day of Service OGDOS
Each spring volunteers gather at the Larkin Center to participate in a one day work project to benefit the Day Care, the Center, Senior Citizens, or families with children living in the 77007 zip code.
