Mission Statement
A community of caring people reaching out to provide childcare, education, and assistance to neighborhood families and individuals, empowering them to meet life's challenges.
Operated and supported by MDUMC starting in 1983, Larkin Community Center began operating as a tax-exempt organization in January 2003, guided by a board of directors, while retaining close ties to MDUMC. Larkin serves the community with the following ministries:
Day Care and After School Care
for 18 month to 12 year old children. Open 7:00 a.m.â6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday year round. No Service Area Limits Volunteers needed for curriculum activities including art, math, science, and computer enrichment. English As a Second Language (ESL) Classes
Offers beginning and intermediate English classes to adults. Classes currently 9:30 a.m.â11:00 a.m. every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of the school year. No service area limits. Emergency Food Pantry
Provides food assistance to families and individuals living in the 77007 zip code. Open from 9:00 a.m.â12:00 noon every Tuesday and Thursday. Volunteers needed to help distribute and/or make up food bags. Donations of non-perishable canned goods and packages of disposable diapers are always needed. Emergency Services
Assists individuals and families living in the 77007 zip code. Special attention given to Senior Citizens and families with children. The Center helps with Utility and Rent Assistance on a limited basis. Also helps provide (if available) new or gently used blankets, electric fans, flu shots, immunizations for children, vision and hearing screenings, mammograms, and blood pressure and blood glucose screenings annually . Seasonal Ministries
Serves individuals and families living in the 77007 zip code. Special attention given to Senior Citizens and families with children. The Center annually provides Thanksgiving turkeys, toys for children (10 and under), and Christmas food bags. Also provides new school supplies for children in Pre-Kâ5th grade every August. One Great Day of Service (OGDOS)
Each spring volunteers gather at the Larkin Center to participate in a one day work project to benefit the Day Care, the Center, Senior Citizens, or families with children living in the 77007 zip code.
