Generosity is about more than what we give. It is about who we are becoming.

Jesus speaks frequently about generosity (and money) because our financial lives reveal our priorities, fears, hopes, and trust. The way we earn, save, spend, and give is part of our discipleship—a practical expression of what we believe about God and the life God has entrusted to us.

This October, MDUMC will begin a four-week series called All In. We’ll explore John Wesley’s three rules for money: Earn All You Can, Save All You Can, and Give All You Can. Throughout, we will consider what it means to place our whole financial lives under the care and direction of Christ. The series will culminate on October 25, All In Commitment Sunday, when every household is invited to prayerfully consider their next step in generosity and what they intend to give toward MDUMC’s shared ministry in 2027.

As part of this invitation, we encourage you to complete a 2027 Estimate of Giving Card and bring it to worship on October 25. Your commitment is a prayerful estimate of your giving for the year ahead and helps our church plan faithfully for the ministry we share.

John Wesley’s Three Rules for the Use of Money

As United Methodists, we draw on the teachings of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, who understood that following Jesus shapes every part of our lives, including how we earn, save, spend, and give. This October, All In will explore Wesley's three simple rules for money outlined in his sermon “The Use of Money.” Together, these practices invite us to use what God has entrusted to us faithfully, live with greater freedom, and grow in generosity.

The Impact of Your Generosity

Through MDUMC, our individual gifts become a shared ministry that no one of us could accomplish alone. Our generosity creates worship experiences where people encounter God, hear the good news of Jesus Christ, and find a community of faith. It provides opportunities for children, students, and adults to learn the faith and grow as disciples. It sustains pastoral care for people experiencing grief, illness, crisis, transition, and celebration. It supports mission partnerships that allow us to serve our neighbors in Houston and beyond. It also provides the people, facilities, technology, and administrative support that make ministry possible every day. These are not simply budget categories. They represent people welcomed, children formed, families supported, neighbors served, leaders equipped, and lives changed.

  • An Estimate of Giving represents your personal commitment to give a specific amount of money to support MDUMC’s ministries and operations during the coming year. It’s not a contract but a promise made in faith.

  • Knowing the total amount that you plan to give in 2027 helps our church leaders prepare a fiscally responsible budget.  By knowing how you plan to give, we know what resources are available to fund our ministries, programs, and operations.    

  • Estimate of Giving cards are available at the church office throughout the week and at the Journey or in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings.  You can also complete this secure online form to submit your Estimate of Giving.

  • Yes!  If your financial situation changes, you may call us to increase, decrease, or adjust your estimate at any time.

  • Your next step is personal to you! For one person, the faithful next step may be to give for the first time. For another, it may be to begin giving regularly, make an intentional pledge, grow toward proportional giving, or practice the tithe. Others may participate through prayer, service, or a commitment that does not include a financial amount.

  • Tithing is the Christian practice of giving 10% of one’s total income to God through the church.  Tithing is the biblical standard of proportional giving for God’s people, and the word “tithe,” literally means “ten percent.”  For Christians, it’s the portion that belongs to God, which we return to God as an act of obedience, love, and worship.    

  • Every gift is important, no matter the size. There is no single amount that defines faithfulness, and your financial capacity never determines your place at MDUMC. We invite you to give as your financial situation allows, and our ministries are supported and strengthened by the combination of gifts of all sizes.

  • Yes. Every commitment will be received with gratitude and handled confidentially.
