Working for justice by building an empowered community among refugees, immigrants, and local Houstonians through practices of hospitality, mutuality, storytelling, and inclusivity.

SHAMBA YA AMANI

Shamba Ya Amani (“the Farm of Peace” in Swahili) is located in the Alief area and directed by FAM’s Women’s Empowerment Group. Members of this group work together each Saturday, along with volunteers, to plant, maintain, and harvest community rows as well as individual family beds. Shamba is also home to a number of beehives that are tended by mothers and youth in the FAM community.

MDUMC serves alongside the women of Shamba Ya Amani at least one Saturday each month! To sign up for an upcoming Farm Day, click the button below.

PAMOJA PROJECT

The Pamoja Project is a brand-new initiative of FAM, piloted with MDUMC members! This project seeks to connect refugee and immigrant families to Houstonian families to create mutual aid groups. MDUMC members are paired with refugee households from FAM as Companions, to accompany one another alongside the joys and struggles that all lives hold.

FAM Houston is recruiting for our next Pamoja Program cohort! Pamoja ("together" in Swahili) builds empowered community by pairing newcomers and Houstonian families to form relationships, engage in mutual learning, and walk alongside one another through all of life's ups and downs. Participants (called Companions) let their partners know that they are seen, cared for, and not forgotten. This cohort will be comprised of Companions from multiple faith communities. FAM staff will hold an interest meeting via Zoom on Sept 25.
